About This 1950's Science Fiction Cult Classic Movie
The 1956 film Forbidden Planet has become a science-fiction cult classic, serving as inspiration for, among other things, the original Star Trek series. The film, directed by Fred Wilcox, starred Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and a very young Leslie Nielsen, later of Naked Gun fame. It tells the story of a twenty-third century starship sent to the planet Altair IV to investigate the mysterious disappearance of an earlier expedition.
Upon landing the starship’s crew is met by one of the most memorable “stars” of the movie – Robby the Robot. Robby takes the crew to the home of Dr. Morbius, who along with his beautiful daughter Altaira, are the only survivors of the original expedition. Morbius eventually tells the crew about The Krell; the planet’s long extinct civilization that had a technology a million years ahead of that of mankind’s. He takes them on a tour of the Krell Machine, a fantastic and immense machine that continues to operate, even 200,000 after The Krell were extinguished in a single night. What happened to The Krell, and what might that mean for the expedition, and even the future of mankind? That’s the story of Forbidden Planet.

Reno to Host the 2011 ‘Renovation’ World Science Fiction Convention
The Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority announced today that Reno will be the host of the 69th ‘Renovation’ World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon). This international event will take place August 17-21, 2011 at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa, the Peppermill Hotel Casino, Courtyard by Marriott and the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, drawing more than 4,000 attendees. This event is expected to generate more than 6,000 room nights in the destination.
